Viccolo della Moretta as it stands today is a mostly passed-through piazza that functions to serve vehicles over pedestrians. It consists of a small vendor stand, parking spaces, a few benches, and broken glass. This piazza is begging to be activated into a bustling community hub.

As part of my site analysis, I was charged with creating a timeline of the general area of Viccolo della Moretta.

Process work in general program and layout

With this design, I wanted to lean into the existing geometries while also bringing life back into the space. The pedestrian must pass through a planted buffer before entering the piazza, separating pedestrian space from vehicular space.

This revitalized design for Vicolo della Moretta stands as a natural oasis, offering respite from urban life. Abundant greenery fosters a strong connection with nature, while ample shade and improved access to the Tiber River enhance the space. Modern design using traditional materials adds sophistication, all while preserving the piazza’s openness and functionality. Adequate seating invites visitors to relax and enjoy the welcoming atmosphere.
