Waterman Hall functions today as the law school library on the University of Arkansas campus. The courtyard that the building is situated around features built-in planters, sculptural elements, built-in tables, and a large, half-dead tree. This is not a space law students spend their time in and it does not serve the school in any significant way.

Inspiration for the overall form and character of this design was taken from the First Avenue Water Plaza in New York City, designed by SCAPE. What I like about this plaza is that it provides a green oasis within a very bustling part of New York City. A natural mood is achieved through materiality and plant palette, while simultaneously incorporating strong geometric patterns. A similar approach was taken with my design.

This design provides a central gathering space for the college to host larger events, as well as a smaller gathering space for students to meet in small groups.
